The American Academy of Pediatrics recently released some suggested guidelines regarding tattoos and piercings, for the first time. The guidelines don’t say anything about not getting one, but they do provide some advice for those considering it.
The first one is a no-brainer: be sure it’s something you want. Interestingly, the majority of people don’t regret their first tattoo but it still important to carefully think about the decision. Although tattoos have gained a tremendous amount of mainstream acceptance, there are still employers that may frown upon employees with visible ones.
For parents concerned about their young ones getting inked, the guidelines reinforce that these days, teenagers wanting tattoos is not a viable indicator of trouble. A teenager wanting a tattoo doesn’t necessarily suggest there may be something wrong.
Perhaps the major thing parents need to watch out for is possible infections. However, the chances of this can be easily minimized by simply doing your homework. Thoroughly research the tattoo parlor or artist and always make sure that your child strictly follows the artist’s healing recommendations.
